STO has a slightly dated and blocky graphical appearance from what I have seen, where as Jumpgate Evolution, due to hit release around June, has a more refined, state of the art, high definition look and feel too it. The game engine looks like it’s going to provide players with a totally immersive space experience that gives you that real stark and interstellar galaxy feel; it could almost come straight out of Bladerunner – “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I’ve watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.”
The gameplay trailers and screenshots look dramatic and visually stunning. The combat looks fast and furious; the style is described by NetDevil as ‘twitch’, suggesting that quick reactions and skills in dog-fighting are going to be essential – anyone remiss in these abilities is going to be spending a lot of time floating in zero gravity amongst space junk I can assure you.
The game is set in a fictional human-based universe with 3 main factions or nations: The Solrain Commonwealth, Quantar Paths and The Octavian Empire. These nations all have their own individual backstory and unique crafts, abilities and etc. The story starts 100 years after a giant war between humanity and its enemies the Conflux has ended with a cataclysmic event known as the Shift. Worlds and solar systems have been torn apart and scattered during this event and the threads of humanity are only just now reforming and reconnecting through a network of Jumpgates, known as the Skein.
NetDevil and Codemasters look like they are going all out on this one. The majority of the game will be PVP based, but there will also be PVE and instanced PVP. Players will be able to rank up, possess multiple ships from cruisers to mining vehicles and a number of trades, professions and upgrades will also be a major aspect of the game. As space MMO’s go this is certainly one to keep an eye on.
