For nearly a decade now there is one company in the United States of America that has become synonymous with the nation of the Star-Spangled Banner, and that company is Wal-Mart. According to global statistics, Wal-Mart is the world’s public largest corporation when it comes to revenue and it’s also the largest public employer in the US. When you take the statistics into consideration, it’s no wonder that the creators of South Parks made an episode dedicated to the capitalist model and nature of the Wal-Mart Corporation. In the past, the company has been subject to numerous criticisms regarding wage bills, illegal workers, predatory pricing and over-competitiveness. One of the most famous examples of Wal-Mart’s overzealousness is the construction of a superstore just 1.9 miles away from the historic Teotihuacan archaeological site. The nearby community were outraged and incensed, but nothing could be done to stop the superstores monument to globalisation being built.
In an attempt to bring a little light humour to the depressing world of capitalist supermarkets, a group of three friends have established the weird and wacky world of the people of Wal-Mart. In their mission statement the guys who set up peopleofwalmart.com state “Let’s face it; we all have seen the people who obviously don’t have mirrors and/or family and friends to lock them in a basement, and they all seem to congregate at Walmart.” Essentially the site is a Rocky Horror Show of America’s most bizzarely dressed goofs, armed with mullets, stilettos and a penchant for facial hair; and of course all of this happens within the unique brightly lit confines of Wal-Mart, America’s cathedral to the great ethos of commercialism.
