To me there’s nothing more appealing than getting in a car and hitting the open road. When it comes to holidays the road-trip truly is king! There’s just something so completely free and unfettered about a road trip. The whole experience brings out this nostalgic emotive joy which I find hard to recreate from any other form of activity or vacation. I’m not quite sure whether it’s just the wind in my hair, the experience of cruising down a motorway in a convertible, or just the thought of hundreds of miles of empty road in front me, which so completely captures my imagination. More than likely it’s just my adolescent obsession with Easy Rider, idea of a road-trip to Mardi Gras and the notion of complete liberty which so captivates me.
When it comes to driving holidays, the USA remains the undisputed champion of the road-trip. Organising a road trip in America is pretty easy; all you will need is a valid UK driving license, complete medical insurance and of course a vehicle, but fear not because there are hundreds of USA car hire firms around, some will even let you drive off and leave the hire car at your final destination without the need to return it.

Iconic Route 66
Of course the other main thing you need to decide is where to start and where to finish up. One of the main reasons the US is such a great place to drive across is its sheer number of attractions and diverse locations. Of course the most iconic trip is to go from west coast to east coast, but if you don’t have the time for that then you can try going down the coast of California, heading out into Nevada to visit Las Vegas, or you could try a trip through the mid-west to the Grand Canyon. If that doesn’t take your fancy then how about taking your hire car to Miami to experience the splendour of the Florida Keys?
There are so many places to visit in the US it can be almost overwhelming when you try to plan out your journey. Once you’ve decided on your location make sure you plan out and research some stops on the way, randomness is nice, but a bit of planning will do wonders. Another fantastic thing about road-tripping in the States is the infrastructure; the roads are generally in excellent condition, there are lots of facilities along the highways and there are numerous breakdown services and garages around. That’s why America remains the home of the road-trip….
Hitting the roads around US is surely fun. My friends and I are planning to do some road trip this weekend, it will definitely be exciting.
This looks like it was a blast! I would love to do that someday with my friends. A roadtrip is defenitaly needed!
I, too, love to go on road trips. I especially like to go where there is not so much desert, but beautiful country to be seen. There is just something about driving and freedom! I would hate not to have a drivers license!

I started in Miami, hired a car and went north.
Road tripping on a bike is total freedom! Your cares fly away with the wind.
