UK Mobile broadband gets more mobile…

Mobile broadband in the UK is getting bigger and it’s getting more mobile. For years the UK has struggled to cope with net speeds and countrywide Wi-Fi coverage, compared to other countries like South Korea we’re still a long way off total net coverage, but things are on the up and wireless is spreading across the country. In an attempt to bring greater wireless coverage to the country, 3UK have recently launched a new mobile Wi-Fi service called Mi-Fi. The new service will become available to all 3 network users by Christmas. The Mi-Fi system provides 3 network users with a small wireless modem the size of a small mobile phone, roughly 86 x 45 x 10mm. The modem allows you to connect a variety of devices to 3’s 3G network without the need for wires or a USB connection. According to the team at 3, the Mi-Fi system doesn’t require any specialist software it just needs an 8 digit network code to grant the user access to the 3G network.

Experts suggest that 3’s new mobile modem will provide net user across the UK with better connectivity and in a much more convenient manner. 3’s Mi-Fi will attempt to compete within the mobile broadband market against the more conventional dongle. 3’s marketing and sales director Marc Allera argued that millions of people are currently unable to access Wi-Fi due to its association with fixed locations. He then went on to suggest that “consumer demand for easy and affordable internet access on the go is growing fast and we’re responding to that by announcing the UK’s first wireless modem.” As well as the new service 3 are continuing to work on and upgrade their 3G network, which currently allows users to connect through contract phones, pay as you go mobile broadband packages and dongles.
